20-year-old Dunlap challenges to win PGA Ama title for first time in 33 years

American Express 3R leader When he won first place at the US Amateur Championship last year, he was the first amateur champion since Mickelson.

Nick Dunlap (USA), an amateur player who took the lead in the third round of the PGA Tour American Express, is hitting an iron shot on the 21st.

Nick Dunlap, winner of last year's US Amateur Championship, is attempting to win the PGA Tour as the first amateur player in 33 years.

Dunlap, a sophomore at the University of Alabama, hit 12 under par 60 with no bogeys, an eagle and 10 birdies in the third round of the PGA Tour American Express held at La Quinta Golf Club (par 72) in California on the 21st. Dunlap, who recorded 27 under par and 189 strokes through the 3rd round, enters the final 4th round as the sole leader, 3 strokes ahead of 2nd place Sam Burns (USA). Dunlap will be 20 years and 29 days old as of the 22nd when the competition ends.

Dunlap, who started the third round at the 10th hole, made 4 consecutive birdies in holes 11 to 14, and made 6 consecutive birdies in holes 16 and 17, reducing the score by 6 strokes in the first half alone. Even in the second half, he reduced 6 more strokes with an eagle on the 6th hole. Dunlap's score of 60 on this day was one stroke short of the course record (59) left by Adam Hedwin (Canada) in 2017. Dunlap said, “Both the driver and putt were good. “In particular, the putt was so good that the hole looked like a funnel.”

Dunlap will play in the same group as Burns and Justin Thomas (31, USA) in the final 4 rounds. Thomas, who finished the third round in third place, four strokes behind Dunlap, is a senior at the University of Alabama and has a total of 15 wins on the PGA Tour, including two wins in major tournaments. Dunlap said, “It’s really cool to see two University of Alabama alumni competing for the championship.” If Dunlap reaches the top of this competition, he will become the first amateur champion in 33 years since Phil Mickelson (USA), winner of the 1991 Tucson Open.

Among the Korean players who participated in this tournament, Kim Si-woo, the winner of this tournament in 2021, tied for 5th place with a total of 20 under par 196 strokes in the middle of the third round. Seongjae Lim and Michael Kim, a Korean-American, were tied for 12th place with 198 strokes, 18 under par. Kim Joo-hyung and Kim Seong-hyun missed the cut. 스포츠토토맨
